Got rejected, but have no idea why? Do not worry, here are some reasons why this may have happened.
🔸Incorrect submissions
Missing or wrong information in your Artist Alley application can lead to rejection. Be sure to fill out forms correctly by providing working portfolio links, accurate artist name, and contact information.
🔸Participation in the last years
If you’ve been part of Artist Alley at the same convention for several seasons, they might eventually prioritize new artists to keep things fresh- don’t be discouraged! Take a break or try other events. However, some conventions favor returning vendors with strong sales, so outcomes may vary.
🔸Portfolio
A portfolio is a very important part of your application. Make sure your portfolio is detailed and shows your abilities, and it’s not just your Instagram page. You can read more about creating a portfolio in our «How to apply for Artist Alley» post.
🔸Merch uniqueness and variety
Conventions aim to create a visually diverse and balanced artist alley, prioritizing a diverse mix, such as original art, keychains, pins, plushies, dice, jewelry, etc. If your work is overly similar to others (e.g., only stickers with only popular characters), you may get rejected.
So it is a great idea to showcase product diversity and uniqueness in your application. Keep your portfolio fresh and pretty!
🔸Residence
Some conventions prioritize citizens of their country. Organizers want to be sure that the artist attends the event, which is easier for those who live closer. Some conventions also take into account that it is most likely for the artist from the same country to recover their expenses.
Some conventions do the opposite to keep Artist Alley fresh and let new artists from other countries participate.
Keep in mind that these are the broadest reasons that vary between conventions and do not apply to some of them! Also, do not forget to follow the conventions’ rules!
