Prejudging is one of the most important parts of a cosplay craftsmanship competitions, so lets make sure that you are fully prepared and confident at your first prejudging.
🔸What is a cosplay prejudging?
It is a one-on-one session with you and the cosplay contest judges, where you explain how exactly you made all parts of your cosplay: wig, costume, accessories; while the judges have a chance to take a closer look at your cosplay and see all the details up close. The judges inspect the seams, props, they sometimes may ask to touch your costume with your permission.
🔸Preparation
Since the time is limited, usually around 3-5 minutes, you need to make sure you would be able to tell everything and not forget about most important details. You should make notes about the key parts and practice your speech to ensure everything fits withing a timeframe.
It is always a good idea to prepare a build book – a printed out step by step process of creating your garment with photos. This way the judges will have a clear picture of the whole making process.
🔸Tips
It is easy to get lost in your speech, so a tip to keep in mind is to describe your cosplay from top to bottom – starting with the wig and finishing with the shoes. Even better if your build book is made in the same order.
There is no wrong or right way to create cosplays. If you used techniques that are not normally seen in cosplay creation or utilised more low budget media instead of the usual EVA foam and worbla, be proud of it! Judges love to see creativity and problem solving skills.
And remember – don’t treat it as a “judges will try to look for all the mistakes that I did”, but rather as an “advertisement” for your costume. Where else would you have a chance to yap about the making process of your cosplay for several minutes straight😊. So take a deep breath and smile, it is your time to shine and show your hard works.
