PAPER TYPES

Almost all artists use paper to create and draw. Even if only drawing digitally, you will still need paper to print your creations. But how to choose the right paper for printing?

I

n general there are two types of printing paper: coated and uncoated. Coated paper means that after manufacturing the sheets they were processed in some way, usually coated with chalk or other materials to give the paper some specific quality.

🔸Coated paper usually has barely visible grain or none at all, it is very smooth to the touch and can come in high glossy, glossy, satin or matte types. Since coated paper is well, coated, it absorbs less printer ink, hence the printed image turns out more crisp and vibrant. That’s why this paper is used by journals, photo albums, posters and high quality prints.

🔸Uncoated paper on the other hand has not been coated in any type of additional material. It usually has pretty apparent grain and texture, usually comes in matte, sometimes glossy variety. Since this paper is uncoated it absorbs a lot of ink hence the colors come out a bit duller and the edges not as crisp. This paper is usually used in book, manga, newspaper, document printing.
