When taking commissions artists safety is the most important part, when it gets to receiving a payment. That’s why we’ve collected the things you should keep in mind while taking commissions.
Here are the most basic measures that help prevent being deceived!
✦Take prepayment.
when taking commissions online it’s the safest way to be sure that person will pay full price for your work
🔸There is 3 different types of prepayment that can be used when taking commissions:
•50% from the final price
•100% of the price
•paying 100% after you finished the sketch and the client approved it
Prepayment cuts off the majority of people who want to scam you but it’s still not 100% guaranteed (with 1 and 3 options).
When taking commissions at conventions the best option is to take full payment before or take 50% at the beginning and second half when finished your work, the last one is less optional for the reason you will not be able to have good communication with the client.
✦Changes
When talking about commissions online often it’s digital artwork and clients may ask for some changes in it.
Set a price for it!
🔸Some people will try to make you do many unreasonable changes that will take part of your time so charge some percents for them. For example:
•1 and 2 changes are for free, from the 3 one it’s 5%* from the final price.
•major changes after the approved sketch will be 25%** from the final price.
*. – it can be more and be fixed price, not percents.
** – can be not in percent, set any price you think is reasonable.
